USER GUIDE
Using the Judgment Updater Calculator
A handy calculator that provides current values for old historical judgments, based on the Canadian and Ontario consumer price index ("CPI"). This calculator also provides today's current equivalent to the $100,000.00 cap on general damages imposed by the Supreme Court of Canada in 1978 (the "CAP"), using the exact month the decision was released, rather than the average CPI rate for 1978 (consistent with the methodology used in Fiddler v. Chiavetti, 2010 ONCA 210).  It is important during negotiations to know the maximum you can claim for general damages, and it is also helpful to keep the Cap in mind in the unlikely event that there is an historical case that renders a current value for general damages that exceeds the current day Cap.  Please note that the CAP in this calculator has been updated using both Ontario and Canadian CPI figures in order to reveal the differences, and allow the reader to decide which result they wish to adopt and lobby for.
The Judgment Updater calculator is also very handy just to use for fun when trying to find out what something "back in the day"  would cost in today's dollars.  For example, Casa Loma was completed in 1914, at a cost of $3.5M: in September 2019 that would be a staggering $80,500,000.00!
